I like to highlight the information and refer back to it when I need to.

I enjoyed reading the information and have used some of it at different times during my teaching. I liked the idea of the Walk and Talk, I guess my concern is when during the day are you to do this. It seems like all my time is taken with teaching. I had lunchroom duty all year, so I can't eat with the kids and I didn't have recess with them, so just visiting with them is harder. You can't take class time to go on a walk unless you have someone in your class to watch the rest of them. I have done it when I had a co-teach class and could leave for a short period of time.

Thanks for opportunity to read this article, I may get the book so I can highlight and refer back to it.
Let me know who you are so I can get you credit.

If school is boring or if you are just going through the motions your students will either start tuning you out or begin finding things to do with their day other than paying attention to you.

Create a “What To Do When I’m Done” poster. They could write, organize backpacks and binders, read, draw, or do homework. Find ways to watch your kids become more engaged and responsible students! What really changes students is their relationship with you. When you connect with a problem student, you begin taking away his motivation to disrupt your class. When you make an effort to bond they'll eventually find something to like in you, and their motivation to cause problems will simply fade away.

When a child enters your classroom, they are aware that they will choose to greet you in one of three ways:

1. A handshake.

2. A high-five.

3. A hug.

It gives kids a chance to say something to the teacher and instantly establishes a connection. It gives kids the distinct feeling that you are glad to be there and glad they are there too.

Teaching children to be optimistic can help he or she be more motivated, successful and healthy, both mentally and physically.

One key difference between optimists and pessimists is how they view failure. Pessimists see failure as permanent, personal and pervasive, while optimists see it as temporary, non-personal, and specific. Pessimists are more likely to view success as something short-term and accidental.

Clearly, for some of our students, the big picture they have of school and their lives isn't working for them, which is one reason they have no problem in trying to ruin your day.

But if you can get them to see a better and bigger picture for themselves you'll experience your greatest fulfillment as teacher.

If you can teach optimism along with the three R’s, you’ll be able to improve behavior, raise grades, and increase any child’s chance of success in life. You are establishing an important connection between

you and students when you walk and talk with them. When you make a real connection with a struggling student, you greatly diminish the

chance he'll end up someday in jail, unemployed, or

with any of the other problems that eventually plague

so many kids with challenges.

It will set a good example for other teachers to follow.

All your students love something — even the ones who won't admit it. And if you can find out what those things are, then those students will be yours.
Okay I'll be briefer than in the past. I thought I was going to have to take the entire week to go through the article- yet it was a fast and meaningful read. I love the "What To Do When You Are Finished" poster. I love the fact that he busted the teachers for not having something to do for the kids who were done early that was fun, meaningful and motivating. I wish I could email this article to some of my own children's teachers. Teaching to the middle has to stop. Just because your are perceived as a low performing school, doesn't mean everyone who goes there is...I'll get off my soapbox now. I agree that relationships are the most important thing to a higher level of learning and that optimism can be modeled and taught. If you don't have the student's trust and respect- nothing is going to work. I am very concerned about how some students perceive success- that it is short term and/or accidental. What a shame- we need to change that ASAP. This is a road we need to walk down with our Mentees at Emmott. Having to change the mindset after the relationship is built- may take more than one grade level year for some students. I have a huge talking point to take up with my own mentee. I really want to implement the Interest Survey at our school. I believe that taking this survey and putting it in the student's cum folder would help all the teachers that teach the student. It would allow us all teachers, AP's, counselors to know a student better and have a touchstone with that student. I also believe the Survey should be edited at the beginning of the 2nd semester. There was so much more inthis article from PBL to depersonalizing failure. I love the "Walk and Talk" idea. I liked the way Mr. Daly reinforced the idea of "doing" rather than "listening" approach to learning. Keeping learning real makes it respected and therefore enticing the student even deeper into the learning process. There's much more I could comment on -Thanks for a great article-time for bed!I tried to check the spelling- it's late.
What to do When I'm Done" poster will alleviate students' passively sitting in class not using "time" wisely and finding inappropriate behaviors to indulge in.

Day 2: "The Welcoming Factor" is best described as a teacher's relationship with the students. The "Welcoming Factor" influences the relationship between the teacher and the students.

Day 3: An optimistic mindset rather than a pessimistic attitude should prevail in the classroom. Failure should be seen, not as failing, but as only a "set-back"/"temporary bump" in the road.

Day 4: Walking and Talking with your students establishes a rapport that allows both the teacher and the students to share their heartfelt feelings. Student behaviors are positively affected when there is communication between the teacher and students.

Day 5: The "radar" referred to here is knowing your students well enough to find out what the students love the most(their interests).

Day 6: Teaching Outside the Box gives the teacher an opportunity to reach students without using textbooks, lectures, and/or exams.

Day 7: As a teacher, we must put ourselves into the realm of understanding what the students are thinking/going through...getting down to the student's level.

He nailed it when he said that making a connection to each child is important. It is so very true that children are motivated by people not projects. I liked the idea about the 3H Rule. While we greet the students in the morning I think that the 3H Rule would make things more personalized and offer variety.

Another thing I enjoyed reading about was the “What To Do When I’m Done” poster. In the past I have had one in the classroom. Mine was a little more specific than his which did not appeal to some of the students. Perhaps a more generic one in the future (relating to science) would be of more use.

Finally, I am glad to read about the peer tutoring. Although the reading buddies are more geared towards the Reading/Language Arts teachers, I have used peer tutoring in class. I have always had a "What to do when I am done..." poster or notebook page, but his is so simple and takes so less time! One of the other things that I make all my students keep is a "WIP" folder..."Work in Progress." It's based on this same idea. Poor behavior begins when good work stops, therefore, if the good work continues, so does the good behavior. "Way back when" we used to do work contracts with rewards given. This might be something that I can do again in my classroom with "empty WIP" folders for Eagle Eggs!!
