First I know this is late – but I wanted to read the article and I don’t care if I get credit for the time.

This was a pretty eye-opening article because of the data. I understand as veteran educators we already know that escape behavior is linked to poor academic output. To see it so clearly documented was like putting a microscope on the issue. I suppose that is what we have to do- get to the core of what we can do to keep those children in the classroom rather than sending them out. Preventive structure is the key. I believe the PBIS effort is a start. I know this was our first year and we can do more to help the students that are in desperate need of reteaching/training the expectations-the question we need to ponder is how to do that. Where do we go from here? The article clearly states over and over with a mass amount of documentation that overall positive school behavior is tied to higher academic achievement. Students who are actively engaged in learning will be less likely to have escape-driven behavior. I believe that means we need to be better teachers and from the data it looks like we have to push that from the kindergarten, if not the pre-k, classes. I personally can now see how the students who have been engaging in escape behavior from kinder and first grade are the ones who still need ODR’s in third grade and up. I believe the ones who have been with us the longest do better than the students who transfer in from other schools. I also know that when the students are pulled from my music class for ARIP and AMIP – my overall classroom behavior improves. I try really hard not to send students out of my room – I don’t want the students to think they can get out of my classroom to escape my tasks they need to complete. I have one student who has been doing that since kinder I can personally see improvement in this area. Now in second grade, he knows he won’t leave my room just because he acts a certain way – he still has to participate even if it’s 2 feet away from his classmates. On the other hand- if a student crossed the line and physically hurts someone, or refuses to allow me to teach the other 35-40 students in my room- they get an ODR. I can’t forget that the other students need to be allowed to learn. So I have to go back and see where I need to improve for those students who need more training with the positive side of PBIS. I believe that is the key – trying to figure out what will work with those students who engage in escape driven behavior. A factor I am dealing with is time to engage the student one on one to do that without pulling them from academic time

Another concern I have is that we are working so hard in the elementary level that what happens when they go to a middle school program. I know Campbell implements PBIS- they “talk” a good talk – but I would like to see their results on ODR’s and suspensions over the past few years before and after now that we have implemented the program- how that carries over to their school. What about the other elementary schools that feed into Campbell? Do they do PBIS – How long have they implemented it and has it carried over to improved behavior and higher test scores in the middle school? I hate to do all this work to have it negated in the middle school our students go to in 6-8 grade. Is there information available to review on that topic?
All the research presented in this article points to one conclusion: Emmott must continue with our PBIS program! Many children and adults tend to avoid some of the things that they find difficult or believe they are not “good” at doing. As long as an escape is found they do not have to deal with the difficult work and somewhat protect a self-esteem that is already low. I think this correlates to the workshop we recently attended. I realize that while other things besides academic competence can create problem behaviors, I think we can agree that if a child feels “bad” about their ability to perform adequately in school, they will act out to hide these feelings, especially with their peers.
I agree that the behavior is directly tied to the learning and that if a child is out of the room because of behavior, learning can not take place. Therefore, the literacy level will go down. I also agree that in the case of math the deficits will actaully get wider as the child goes through school. I think is is common knowledge to believe that if the classroom behavior is supported and is on target, the students would recieve more instruction time with the teacher and therefore, their grades would improve.

The correlation between acadmics and behavior has been a constant all 24 years that I have taught. Actively engaging the student in the classroom is one of the best ways to help students grow in their weakest areas. I also found it interesting that behavior improved many times with attendance. Statistics are showing that schools who participate in behavior promoting programs, such as PBIS, show significcant academic growth after just a few short years.

Are we willing to look at each and every perspective influencing behavior and how it relates to achievement? If we are, then this article gives multiple cases of evidence showing that a positive school-wide environment is directly related to achievement. “School-wide behavior support can improve variables that have been suggested to improve academic performance such as student attendance, reduced exclusionary discipline practices, classroom instructional time, and academic engagement.” According to these findings, schools implementing school-wide behavior support are showing greater academic success.

So, what was discovered when reviewing the relationship between achievement and problem behavior? This article states several sightings where academic performance was a direct link to behavior. In fact, some studies indicated that reading success in grades as early as kindergarten could be directly associated with possible behavioral problems later on in elementary. Regardless of varying skills, if students do not respond to literacy instruction negative behavior becomes more likely. Essentially, if achievement is below level, it can be concluded that there will be a strong likelihood that their behavior will be below expectation as well. Disciplinary problems were also associated to math scores as well. It is suggested that academic performance and future problematic behavior are directly related across all grades levels. The ultimate goal then becomes to impact the students behavior in a positive manner in order to keep them in the classroom. If the students spend more of their time in class versus the office, the result is increased learning time which will lead to increased academic success.

Engaging students and keeping them in school and in the classroom is undoubtedly going to affect academic success. Beyond engagement, it is our responsibility to ensure that our instruction is direct, and purposeful to the academic skills that meet our curriculum objectives. Without effective instruction, students are already at a disadvantage. If behavior and academics are truly linked, then it is our responsibility to identify the most effective way to make the connections between academics and a positive learning environment.
So agree - they have to 'want' to be in the class; therefore less likely to act out regardless of their abilities in that subject... :)
I think that if a student exhibiting behavior problems can be convinced that a teacher cares about them and wants them to succeed, then there is hope for academic success.
