\n
\nAs I wrote in my first discussion posting my plan this year to help my students better develop these skills is to give the gift of time. This allow my students more opportunity for self discovery and time to internalize new information. I plan to be more consistent in my use of reflective open-ended questioning (\u201cWhat do you understand?\u201d \u201cWhat do you wonder about?\u201d \u201cHow is life like this?\u201d) that emphasizes using their five senses & encourages students to formulate their own. I will continue to use and improve games & activities that incorporate my students interests, build memory & vocabulary, & create hands-on lessons that are relevant that apply to my students abilities, & needs, that are FUN, provoke the imagination, and individuality. I will plan my lessons so that they are more effective and efficient and don\u2019t over saturate the lessons sole objective.

\nAs the author stated "I feel like I am flying an airplane and nobody's on it!" My goal this year in my teaching is not to be the only passenger on that plane!

\nI thought this was a great book. It reminded me of what it was like as a student again, and reaffirms what I am doing in the classroom. I have a great deal of insight about education in Cy-Fair. I have been a student, I now teach, and am a parent of a child who will attend schools in Cy-Fair. Ironically, I still see the same challenges that I had as a student as we do today in the classrooms. I feel this gives me a greater advantage as an educator in reaching all of my students. My goal is to never let my kids fall through the cracks. I will not let my higher achieving students go unchallenged, my hard workers go unnoticed, or my struggling students get left behind. I believe a teacher can truly make a difference in a child\u2019s learning successes and failures.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13254401","dateCreated":"1248060292","smartDate":"Jul 19, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"jlm10616","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jlm10616","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/emmotteagles.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13254401"},"dateDigested":1532426467,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Final Reflection (Mann)","description":"There are several things I am going to do in my classroom this coming year. I will use open ended questioning to help them do the same - and teach them how to "think about thinking". \nIt is not surprising that only one out of six had the connections. After all, if the others had the connections, they might not have needed summer school, right? \nAfter reading this book I thought of a lot of things I want to try, but I picked out one that is going to be my goal for this next school year. I want to try to create a better relationship between each one of my students and myself. I want each one of my students to feel that I have a special bond with them. So...my plan is to eat lunch with each one of my students at least once a semester. I often talk to my students on the playground during recess duty, but I really want to be able to make myself more available to them. I am going to give each one of my kids an undivided 30 minute lunch break with me so that I can better get to know them. I think that by doing this my students will have a better relationship with me and they will get more out of what I am teaching. Hopefully my students will feel that I care about them as an individual and as a member of the class. I'm hoping that it will also help them to be more accepting of each other because they know that I accept them. In my class, we always say that we are a family and that we treat eachother the way that we want to be treated. My ultimate goal is that by me just spending a little one-on-one time with my students that they will see that they trully are a part of our classroom family and that they are important. I also want to try to have a couple of times where I eat lunch with my whole class and where we can all sit around and talk about what is going on in our lives and how we feel. I have a classroom meeting every Monday, but I would like for these "lunch meetings" to be less formal. I may find that once a semester isn't enough, so I may have to increase the number of individual lunch sessions with me to help bring home the message. I want my students to know that I care about them as an individual and as a member of our class. I also want my students to feel comfortable about coming and talking to me about anything. After all, I tell them that I'm their "school mommy" and to me a real mommy is one you can talk to about anything.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13087153","dateCreated":"1246630112","smartDate":"Jul 3, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"1497","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/1497","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/emmotteagles.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13087153"},"dateDigested":1532426468,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"final thoughts","description":"mbales
\nI have been thinking how can I put this book and its lessons into practice for next year and what I have come up with is just give them time. The students need time to process information and the concepts that are taught. I know, as many of you, that we are under the gun of time restraints. We have a certain amount of time to teach a topic and then we have to move on to something else. I am going to try very hard to give my students time to visualize and have them meditate meaning so the information will sink in and be remembered. I also plan to use more open ended questions in class and give them the opportunity to reflect and to think. The students need time to connect the new information with the previous information and see how they are related to each. This takes time, which we don't always have to much of. This can be done in stations or centers. Providing opportunities to experience the same thing over and over again. Hopefully this will make them feel much more confident in their learning. I enjoyed reading the book and hope it will help me become a better teacher and a better person overall.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
